Chan Ka Nin was born in Hong Kong in 1949 and moved with his family to Vancouver in 1965. While pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of British Columbia, he began studying composition with Jean Coulthard. After graduation, he decided to continue his composition studies with Bernhardt Heiden at Indiana University, from where he received both Master and Doctoral degrees. Since 1982 Chan has been teaching theory and composition at the University of Toronto. Chan has composed music for orchestra, chamber ensembles, voices, and instrumental soloists. He has won numerous awards for his compositions, including the 2001 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding New Musical for his opera Iron Road and the 2002 Juno Award for Best Classical Composition for his chamber work, Par-ci, par-là. His music is performed in Canada and internationally.
