Woodshedding is a time honoured tradition where an artist practices until their technique is perfected. The Canadian League of Composers and the CMC are bringing a series of free workshops, titled Woodshedding, to the Ontario region after a successful launch of the program in BC region. The upcoming Woodshedding series will explore extended technique for the accordion, double bass and percussion. Musicians and composers will learn from, and engage with, the experienced performers who will facilitate each session. Read it here...

Attention emerging composers in Toronto and the GTA! CMC Ontario is accepting proposals for the Toronto Emerging Composer Award 2012. This annual award will support the creation of a new musical work, or the completion of an existing music-based project. It will be offered to the candidate who best demonstrates artistic excellence matched by innovation, experimentation, and a willingness to take risks. The award is valued at $6,000. The Ruth Watson Henderson Choral Composition Competition is a contest for new choral works. This biennial competition alternates between pieces for treble voice choirs and for mixed choirs. The 2011 competition asked for an SA or SSA work for children’s choir, which could be either a cappella or accompanied by piano. The eligible composers must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants, residing in Canada; their submissions must be original; they must not have been previously commissioned or published, and must have been composed within the last two years.

On October 22nd, 2011, at Fraserview Church in Richmond, BC, CMC Associate Composer Jocelyn Morlock’s piece Ned the Neck will be premiered by the BCMEA’s Honour Wind Ensemble. Ned the Neck is a short work for high school level wind ensemble. This performance will be part of the BCMEA Conference: Forte 2011: Growing Strong in Music Education, which is taking place at the River Rock Casino Resort between October 20th – 22nd, 2011

The Canadian Music Centre is very pleased to announce that it has appointed Matthew Fava as the new Regional Director for the Ontario Region. Matthew will take the place of Jason van Eyk who held the position for 7 years. Matthew has an undergraduate degree in History and Communications from York University. Following his undergrad, Matthew began working at CHRY community radio station first as the music director, then as the program coordinator.
