Borrowing Info

Loan requests

  • Loans are made available for 2 months within North America or 3 months abroad.
  • A maximum of 10 titles can be borrowed at any particular time.
  • Outside of Canada, the borrower is responsible for the cost of postage.

Shipping of Music

All loans are sent out via surface post at no cost to the borrower.

  • Within Canada - approximately 1-2 weeks
  • Abroad - approximately 2-3 weeks
  • Please note - remote locations may require extra time for delivery.

If faster delivery service is required, CMC can arrange for courier delivery. This expense is the responsibility of the borrower and a VISA or MasterCard number is required before the package is sent.

The CMC is not responsible for any losses the borrower may incur due to late arrival of scores on loan. If a loan request is for music festivals or conservatory tests, it is recommended that requests be made three weeks in advance to allow for delivery via post.

Returning music and Overdue policies

  • Music should be returned by the due date or the last business day before the due date.
  • Music is not regarded as returned until it has arrived at a CMC Centre.
  • Borrowers are responsible for the replacement costs of lost or damaged music. Music that has been marked with pencil or other writing is regarded as damaged.
  • Borrowers are not assessed fines for overdue scores at this time. However, the CMC reserves the right to refuse further loans to borrowers who have any overdue scores.
  • Library copies of works are not for sale - please see Sales Information.

Within Canada - Return postage is free of charge. Please use postage paid label included with package.

Outside of Canada - Borrowers are responsible for the cost of shipping and safely returning their music to the CMC.

Special note to borrowers from the United States: Please do not use United Parcel Services (UPS) to return music to the CMC as extra costs are assessed at the border for packages being returned to Canada. The CMC Centres will not pay for any charges to have music returned or for packages delivered with postage fees due. If such is the case, the package will be returned to the sender.

Loan Extensions

Loans are renewable at any time for a maximum period of three loan periods. Any request for extension must be made before the original due date. Please contact any CMC Centre to extend a loan.

The CMC reserves the right to recall a score that has been renewed should another patron request it.

The CMC reserves the right to refuse an extension request that is made after the original loan is overdue.

Other

Recordings at the CMC are not circulated. Patrons can listen to recordings using CMC's listening room facilities.

Works with ten or more instrumental parts are available on a rental basis only – please see Rental Information. However, the score for a rental work is available for loan from the library.

Rental Information

The CMC acts as a rental agent for unpublished print music by its Associate Composers.

For works with ten or more performers, instrumental parts are available on a rental basis only. An exception to this is band music, for which instrumental parts may also be purchased. To purchase band music, or parts for works with less than ten performers, please see Sales Information.

The rental period is normally three months, with materials sent from the CMC two months in advance of the performance. If you require a longer rental period, please let us know.

For choral music, please see Sales Information.

Rental Fee Schedule

Rental fees are calculated on a per-minute, per-performance basis, in one of three performance categories:

  • Professional
  • Semi-professional
  • Community / Educational

Discounts are available for multiple performances of a work within a three-month period:

  • 25% off 2nd performance
  • 50% off 3rd and each subsequent performance

Performers may read through a work prior to programming it. The read-through fee is $50.00, and is non-refundable. If the work is programmed, the read-through fee will be applied to the rental fee.

Sales Information

The CMC acts as a sales agent for unpublished print music by its Associate Composers. It also acts as a reseller for select published titles - please see CMC Boutique for these works.

The CMC sells scores on a mail-order, print-on-demand basis from its workshops in Toronto and Montreal. Our scores are reproduced with the performer in mind - we scan and clean the composer's master, then print it on thick, custom-size paper. We use durable covers, and metal coil bindings that are silent and lay flat on a music stand.

For works with less than ten performers, instrumental parts are available for purchase. For works with five or fewer performers, an additional option exists to borrow the parts from the CMC Library at no cost. For professional performance, the CMC asks that instrumental parts be purchased rather than borrowed.

For works with ten or more performers, please see Rental Information.

For choral works that are to be performed, the CMC sells a single copy of the score at full price along with a Reproduction Agreement. This agreement permits reproduction of a set number of copies for the choir, at a greatly-reduced price per voice. The choir assumes all reproduction costs, and may keep all materials for future performances.

Prices

Score and part prices vary according to page count, paper size, and binding. Please request a price quote for a specific title from CMC staff - see "Getting a Price Quote."

As a non-profit organization, our prices reflect the cost of reproduction plus a royalty for the composer. As such, we are unable to offer a discount for retailers.
