CMC Composers and Centrediscs Recordings Nominated for Western Canadian Music Awards

Toronto

June 5th, 2012, TORONTO, ON – The Canadian Music Centre’s (CMC) Centrediscs label is pleased to announce four nominations in the categories of Classical Recording of the Year and Classical Composition of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards. The following have been nominated for both categories: • Music • Still Image O Music and Still Image are available on CD or as digital download at www.musiccentre.ca | www.centremusique.ca O Music (Composer Allan Gilliland) From Allan Gilliland, former Composer in Residence with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, comes Centrediscs’ first CD dedicated solely to wind band music. This jazzy and upbeat offering takes notes from great jazz soloists and famed musical themes, from West Side Story to Rhapsody in Blue. The music is performed by the New Edmonton Wind Sinfonia (NEWS), conducted by Raymond Baril, with featured soloists James Campbell, clarinet, and Dean McNeill, trumpet. Pinnacles (Composer Owen Underhill) The four pieces for string quartet recorded here, including a quintet with trombone and clarinet respectively, span a period of 1997 – 2011. Separately commissioned, the compositions have their own identity. At the same time, a multitude of relationships resonate across the works, contributing to a cyclical quality to the project as a whole. The two string quartets, through composed in a single movement, unfold in juxtapositions of contrasting sections. The two quintets, constructed in multiple movements, were commissioned by two remarkable musicians: Jeremy Berkman and François Houle. Owen Underhill lives in Vancouver where he is active as a composer, conductor and faculty member in the School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University. Centrediscs is a WCMA and JUNO Award winning recording label that is unique among recording labels in Canada because it features only works by Canadian composers.
